Christian, Countess of Dalhousie: An Early Reader of Jane Austen in North America

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Central Library

Description

Join us for an illustrated lecture on Christian, Countess Dalhousie, presented by Dr. Juliette Wells, the Elizabeth Connolly Todd Distinguished Professor of English at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland.

Christian, Countess of Dalhousie, accompanied her husband, Lord Dalhousie, to Halifax for his tenure as Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia, 1816-1820. While resident in the province, the Countess pursued her many interests. She was a skilled amateur botanist and plant collector as well as a lover of literature with an interest in the latest publications.

Looking at her primarily as an early reader of Jane Austen sheds light on issues concerning who reads Austen, what those readers thought, and what role Austen’s readers played in the development of Austen’s international fame.
