Join us for the launch of Joel Zemel's new book, Dr. Clement Courtenay Ligoure: Publishing, Social Advocacy and the 1917 Halifax Disaster.
Dr. Ligoure was a Trinidadian who became the first Black physician to practice in Nova Scotia. During the weeks following the 1917 explosion in Halifax Harbour, Dr. Ligoure treated hundreds of patients without payment, saving many lives.
He also was a supporter of African Nova Scotians: as editor and publisher of The Atlantic Advocate, the first newspaper in Canada devoted to the interests of Black people Nova Scotia, as a fundraiser for the No. 2 Construction Battalion, and as ardent spokesman for Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League.
Join Joel Zemel for a presentation, question period, and book signing.
