I'm not sure if this is a true story, but it was extremely well done and was very inspiring. I loved the little girl as Akeelah and I can tell that she will be very successful in her acting career. A perfect blend of drama and education are presented here. Loved Lawrence Fishburn as the spelling coach and although he didn't have a whole lot of lines, Curtis Williams was great as the principal of Akeelah's school. I'd never seen him in a dramatic role before, and he gave a fantastic performance. This movie just goes to show what a lot of hard work and determination will get you.
This is a family-friendly movie with a message that everyone can appreciate. Akeelah, a young black girl growing up in South Los Angeles, has a lot of obstacles to overcome--getting bullied, her brother is in a gang, her father is dead, and her mother doesn't have time for her, to name a few. Through her persistence, and with the help of her principal who saw something special in her, and a coach, she made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. My favorite part was that her whole community supported her and, and many helped her train for the Bee. Even though this movie was made over 10 years ago, it still holds up and is heart-warming, especially in these divisive times.
An inspiring story that uses the unlikely vehicle of a spelling bee to illustrate a young girl's persistence in growing out of the cramped role supposedly predestined for her. Keke Palmer does a great job in portraying a young girl in South Los Angeles, with an overworked single mom who pays more attention to keeping her younger son out of the gang lifestyle. The mom initially allows her own insecurities to block Keke's progress. Very family-friendly. Its pacing is a bit off, though: Akeelah starts to gain some success, then a cascade of problems arise. Laurence Fishburne's performance is surprisingly flat.
This was a phenomenal movie!!! I would say this is one of the best movies that I have seen and I hope you will enjoy this movie just as much as I did
Inspiring and enjoyable to watch Akeelah self-confidence grow. The actors are outstanding!
Great movie , touching and well done. Good to watch with kids or actually any age group would enjoy it .
Growing up, self confidence important lessons. Some cliches, but still very good.
Good inspirational family movie based around, of all things, spelling bee's. Just a well acted, feel good flick.
A nice warm inspiring feel-good movie. Girl who played Akeelah did nice job, as did Lawrence Fishburn. Plot is predictable - Young girl in bad neighborhood rises above her environment to become champion, etc., etc. But script and actors draw you in anyway. So watch it and just enjoy.
