Really enjoyed it. I had already read the Falco and Albia series. But after finishing this, it makes me want to re-read the Falco books, especially the instances where Vespasian and Caenis appear.

This fleshed out novel on a obscure character (mistress?) in turbulent time & bring alive Roman Empire warts & all explained why author is so great.
Read this while waiting for next Falco novel back then.
Caenis as a behind the scene mover & shaker for middle-class Vespasian to conquer Great Britain very plausible.
Characterization was very deep.
The military action & political backstabbing rivaled Clancy's technothriller.
Learned a lot on year of the four emperor & why legions chose Vespasian.
Highly recommend offbeat historical novel.
