The second word of the subtitle to the book is important - Western - for the folk story traditions of China, India, Africa, Arabs and Persians, and all of Australia are left out. The book is more like a subject dictionary with mostly brief entries; the reader would be better served by Wikipedia for learning about Lang or Propp (scholars who did some work in folklore). The book claims to cover North America too, but Boaz's book about the stories of the Northwest Indians is not even in the bibliography. There is no index, but there are many pictures.
