T.C. Boyle blends idealism and satire in a story that addresses the universal questions of human love and the survival of the species. In the year 2025 global warming is a reality, the biosphere has collapsed, and 75-year-old environmentalist Ty Tierwater is eking out a living as care-taker of a pop star's private zoo when his second ex-wife re-enters his life...

Portents of an eco-terroist hero's future. Fairly well written with a good plot line. I am not sure what the author really is trying to say would be the only flaw. He seems to be mocking the motivations and efforts of main stream environmentalists (the protagonist wife seems to at some points be willing to compromise principles), and saying that violence won't accomplish anything either, and at the same time sounds sympathetic to their cause.I guess the message is that any fight for protecting the environment will lose, so fight the best fight you can with whatever method you prefer.

I was just thinking about The Road and how I love end of the world books and I thought of this one I read a while back. So great....and with an enviromental message....the constant rain, ugly zoo animals and rice wine!
