An atmosphere of unease and apprehension is established early on in this book as through Henry’s narrative sections we glimpse the dark aspects of his character that motivate the use of his considerable charm and sexual skill. Despite the successful exploitation of several wealthy women in the past, at over sixty Henry is at low ebb, living in squalid conditions on a borrowed houseboat. Daisy, an attractive, loving woman in late middle age, moves into a nearby cottage seeking a quiet, restorative location in which to continue her successful writing career. The development of the poignant love affair between them is portrayed with delicacy and skill as the tension heightens with each revelation of Henry’s self-delusion and heartless calculation. Even while enjoying the art of the author and appreciating her fine characterization one reads with mounting dread as to the outcome of this doomed relationship. Highly recommended as a literary pleasure with the added thrill of suspense!
