I watched this classic on a recommendation from a friend, and figuring Billy Wilder was responsible didn't hurt my interest much either. I was mildly disappointed with it primarily because of, as another pointed out, the dated comedic parts which were definitely relevant in their time but sadly felt just plain antiquated to me.

Excellent movie. Billy Wilder was one of the best.

Doesn't hold up well. Probably was much better when new and hadn't been done before.
Some of the acting was very good (William Holden) but some of the comedic acting was overdone and just didn't hold up well. The television series "Hogan's Heroes" was based on this movie and we found that series to be much funnier. We also found this movie to be quite predictable. Our rating is based on seeing it in 2016.

William Holden finest picture by far which earned him the Oscar for Best Actor in 1949. The story follows Holden as he and his fellow German prison camp roommate's try to escape. During the first hour of the film Holden is the guy running all the betting games in the barracks. It gets more serious during the second hour. Otto Preminger plays the cruel German Camp Commander and I thought he should have gotten an award as well. Overall, you won't find many war movies better than "Stalag 17"!

This movie was very good. It reminded me of the film with Colin Farrell called 'Hart's War'. The difference is this had comedy ! I think the actors were amazing and the story line kept me hooked in and the ending left me on the edge of my set.

This is a 1953 war film that tells the story of a group of American airmen held in a German World War II prisoner of war camp.
They come to suspect that one of their number is an informant.
Produced and directed by Billy Wilder, it was adapted from the Broadway play, which was based on the playwright's experiences as prisoner in Stalag 17B in Austria.
Along with "The Great Escape" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai," this is considered as the greatest World War II Prisoner of War film.
I think, however, this film is worse than the other two simply because it includes gratuitous comical scenes.

This B/W film from the past, by Billy Wilder, is one of the better films on the subject of POW's in WWII. A must for Wilder's fans.

I read a comment once on the internet that said "If you watch this film, you'll be a William Holden fan for life." I totally agree with that. Holden's performance is that good. Interesting how Stalag 17 served as inspiration for Stalag 13 in Hogan's Heroes.

This film helps in defining and tuning your ability to focus. The plot is so intense, so mesmerizing that you cannot help but to direct all your senses to the action and reaction of this masterpiece.
