"Heavenly bells are ringing, jubilant choirs are singing and Christmas joy is blanketing the world like freshly fallen snow. But the Yuletide spirit has yet to warm Bishop Henry Brougham's Victorian home. Struggling to raise funds for a new cathedral, the preoccupied young clergyman has neglected his loving wife Julia, and now only divine intervention can save their marriage! But the powerful and handsome angel sent from above has a mind of his own…and teaching mortal Henry an immortal lesson in romance isn't all he's got planned!"--Container.

Fun, sometimes touching Christmas picture offers a great cast of character actors, with Monty Woolley exceptional. Everyone seems to always love this one for Cary Grant, but after a number of viewings over the years, I feel it's really David Niven who gives the true performance. Let's face it. Grant, after all, is usually simply ... Cary Grant. Highlights include the sherry scene with Woolley. The opposite is felt with the ice-skating (there's literally nothing realistic about it), though how can you ever not love James Gleason?

Definitely worth the entertainment time. This is a truly classic movie. Cary Grant does an exquisite job in his role as the angel. David Nivens and Loretta Young play well on each other and the sparks between Loretta and Cary cannot be seen with the naked eye but they are definitely there. Sad but true that movies like this are not made any more. Value the classics and something will be added to your existence. Thank you to the library staff for having this among their offerings. Would only suggest to add more classicS to offerings.

Fabulous and charming movie. They don't make movies like this anymore. Cary Grant is fantastic as the angel.

Old-fashioned movie with an angel taking on the task of marital counselling, along with choosing what matters.

We no longer consider ourselves Christians. We watched this whole movie with pleasure, though. It is nice. Made in 1947, when we were children, the script isn't as dumb as it seems in places. It has good values. However, if the acting weren't great, the movie would make you want to puke.

I watch this movie every Christmas. A lovely movie about struggling with faith, prayers being answered differently than we expect, and finding joy in the true meaning of Christmas. I always enjoy watching Cary Grant and David Nivens.

Classic. Right up there with Frank Capra’s ‘’It’s A Wonderful Life.‘’ A must for the holiday season.

Very dated. I could not finish it. Role of the obedient, trusting wife and suspicious husband obscured the message.

An angel answers a bishop's prayer for guidance, just prior to Christmas. This black-and-white movie is a little slow, but it's worth seeing at least once. It is a light and gentle comedy. Cary Grant made every film he was in better. The Preacher's Wife starring Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston is a remake of The Bishop's Wife. Fun fact for Minnesotans: According to imdb.com, the snowball fighting scene in The Bishop's Wife was filmed at Loring Park in Minneapolis.

A nice little classic Christmas movie. It has its dated moments, but largely stands the test of time. As for classic Christmas films, I liked this better than Miracle on 34th Street, but not nearly as much as It's a Wonderful Life (though I personally don't consider ...Wonderful Life a "Christmas movie" per se). I liked the tension in this film, was even a little surprised at how far they took the implications, but wished it could've been taken a little further. This is one I might revisit in Christmas future.
