Even though I generally do like actor, James Garner - I didn't think that he was well-suited for his role here in TV's "The Rockford Files" (from 1975). For one thing - At 47 years old - Garner was clearly too old for a part that was definitely meant for a man about half his age.

Garner played Jim Rockford, a $200-a-day P.I. working in and around Los Angeles - And I think that if any investigator emulated Rockford's "modus operandi" to get the job done - They'd either be dead in no time flat, or, at least, be out of work, like - pronto!

For all of the beatings and roughing-up that Rockford took in these episodes, it made no sense to me why he refused to carry a gun in order to avoid having to endure all of this unnecessary violence, and what-not.

And, last but not least - At a 50-minute running time - These TV episodes (with all of their excess story-padding) were way too long to hold my undivided attention all the way through to their inevitable (and sometimes silly) conclusion.

Good theme music, characters you get to know. Helpful but cranky Dt. Becker, Scummy Angel and Lovable Joeseph. And what a gorgeous lawyer....

Like Rockfords style. Smart smashmouth, certainly ethical to a fault and gets the job done.

Jim Rockford, an ex-con pardoned for an armed robbery he didn't commit, is a private investigator specializing in closed cases. His office is his oversized trailer next to the Malibu pier. His pricey fee of $200 a day plus expenses makes it hard for him to attract clients, but he is well worth it. He is sometimes assisted by his father Joseph (a.k.a. Rocky), his best friend Sgt. Dennis Becker of the LAPD, his lawyer/girlfriend Beth Davenport, and his former cell-mate Evelyn "Angel" Martin.
