"In this thrill-packed actioner, a small-town diner owner, Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen, The Lord of The Rings) finds himself a local hero after he successful takes down two thugs during an attempted robbery. But his sudden celebrity draws unwanted attention from the outside world, including mobsters Carl Fogarty (Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, A Beautiful Mind) and Richie Cusack (Academy Award winner William Hurt, Kiss of the Spider Woman), who insist that Tom is intricately tied to their past. Fogarty begins stalking Tom's wife (Maria Bello, The Cooler) and children, resulting in a bloody standoff in which Tom must protect his family from what is either a case of mistaken identity or a violent past that's finally caught up with him."--Container.

An astounding movie about the psychological complexity of dealing with one's past, and how behavioral traits develop in a family setting. Viggo is phenomenal. A must-see.

I expected more.

Excellent movie by Cronenberg. His best I think. Powerful violent and sexual scenes set the pace. It's dark, nuanced, well acted and a film you never forget.

A remarkably convincing examination of heroism, hero worship, and the seductive allure of villainy.

Terrible. Waste of time. You'd think with the cast it would be good, but the story is not creative and with the poor acting of the lesser actors, none of the characters believably develop. Just don't bother.

Ed Harris and William Hurt were not believable as gansters. William Hurt came across more as an angry head waiter. The fight scenes were also unbelievable, they would have fit better in an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.

An engrossing, thrilling feature about trying to become someone else.

The trailer to “History of Violence” is more exciting that the actual film. Although the beginning is quite promising, it is soon evident that there is no real threat to Viggo Mortensen’s character or his family. No one stands a chance against this professional killer. Thus, there is little thrill in this thriller.

*SPOILER* A concrete role for Viggo -- he's credible as both the humble small-town bumpkin, AND the strong silent type, cold-hearted killer. Ed Harris makes a believable scumbag; William Hurt... I don't know. Great actor, but it just didn't feel right, though. (He seems too nice.) A well paced thriller from Cronenberg. Enjoyed it. FIVE STARS.

Well-acted movie.

[Mr. Fogarty holds his gun on Tom asking if he has any last words]

Carl Fogarty: [angry tone] You got anything to say before I blow your brains out, you miserable prick?

Tom Stall: [gruff voice] I should've killed you back in Philly.

Carl Fogarty: [smiles] Yeah, Joey. You should have.

(Judy and Jack are smoking a joint in front of the Post Office) Judy Danvers: "So you think this is as good as it gets?" Jack Stall: "For us? Yeah. For now. Eventually, we, uh, we grow up, we get jobs, we have affairs, and we become alcoholics."

Richie Cusack: "You always were a problem for me, Joey. When Mom brought you home from the hospital, I tried to strangle you in your crib. I guess all kids try to do that. She caught me... whacked the daylights out of me..." Tom Stall (Joey Cusack): "...I've heard that story..." Richie Cusack: "Well, what do you think? Better late than never?" Tom Stall (Joey Cusack): "Richie... I'm here to make peace. Tell me what I have to do to make things right." Richie Cusack: "You could do something, I guess... You could die, Joey." (Richie's thug Ruben silently pulls a twine garrote out of his sleeve as Richie turns his back on Joey)
