Emmaline moves in with her indulgent aunt. Emmaline likes to invent flying machines, but not fly in them. Enter the "rubber boy" who rarely gets hurt no matter how much he falls in the contraptions she creates. Unfortunately, her overly proper mother takes some bad advice from a friend and enrolls Emmaline in a worst than Dickensian boarding school with pterodactyl watch dogs who chase down escapees. Nevertheless, Aunt, Sikh friend, and Rubber boy are determined to orchestrate a rescue.
