"When ex-con Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) says he has a plan to make a killing, everybody want to be in on the action. Especially when the plan is to steal $2 million in a racetrack robbery scheme in which "no one will get hurt." But despite all their careful plotting, Clay and his men have overlooked on thing: Sherry Peatty (Marie Windsor), a money-hungry, double-crossing dame who's planning to make a financial killing of her own...even if she has to wipe out Clay's entire gang to do it!"--Container.

The Killing (1956)

Is this the perfect film noir? It might be. I don't think noir gets any better than this.

Interesting that instead of telling the story in a linear fashion, Kubrick gives an outline for the plot in the earlier scenes, then subsequently shows action going on parallel to later central scenes. The producers were unsure they could make this work, tried re-cutting to form a linear narrative, then reverted to the earlier version. It worked.

.
Mediocre heist film with a stupid ending (the dog).

Tight economical storytelling, brilliant camera work, wonderful ensemble performances - this is a film far ahead of its time. A true gem from the 50's.

This movie could have another title: Gone With The Wind. I've seen it before and liked it every time. All the characters are definitely characters in their own right. No one detracts from anyone else, no ham performances. But it is a depressing picture where no one wins anything. In fact, just about everyone looses their life before it is all said and done. Stanley Kubrick was to say the least an iconoclastic film director.

"The Killing" ~
Enjoyed the unique style of narration, to the point. Didn't know this was done by Stanley Kubric but once I saw his name I knew I had to give it a chance & very glad I did. Love Kubric's sense of irony.

Very good, but I wish it was longer. It pulled me in, and suddenly it was over. (What 2nd. DVD?).

"The Killing" is one of Stanley Kubrick's first major films. He would go on from here do such films as "Paths of Glory", "Spartacus", "Lolita" and Dr. Strangelove or How I Stopped Worrying and Loved the Bomb". Sterling Hayden has a plan for a robbery and he feels it fool proof. I won't give any plot details away. Stanley Kubrick even at this early stage of his career has great cinematography and tight script. You will be on the edge of your seat. It is rare to see a director so young make such a great film.

The Killing: Johnny Clay: "...Suppose, by accident, you do get picked up. What've you done? You shot a horse! It isn't first degree murder; in fact, it isn't even murder; in fact, I don't know what it is. But the chances are, the best that they could get you on would be... uh, inciting a riot, or shooting horses out of season, or something like that." Nikki Arcane: "The way you put it, Doc, you make it sound real simple, you know Pops?"

The Killing: Maurice (to Johnny Clay): "...You have my sympathies, then. You have not yet learned that in this life you have to be like everyone else -- the perfect mediocrity; no better, no worse. Individuality's a monster and it must be strangled in it's cradle to make our friends feel confident. You know, I've often thought that the gangster and the artist are the same in the eyes of the masses. They are admired and hero-worshipped, but there is always present an underlying wish to see them destroyed at the peak of their glory."
