It's dangerous.
White people love Jamaica. Or, should I say, they love the idea of Jamaica: the music, the Caribbean, the weed, the crushing poverty (Oh, wait.). Jamaica really exploded into the Western world through its music in the 1970s. For a while, Bob Marley's "Legend" was handed out at every freshman orientation (I have yet to verify this, but it feels true.). Marley's success and the Island record label brought it to a wider audience and it was a key part of the soundtrack to the early days of punk in England and influenced bands like the Clash, Public Image, and the Slits. 1978's "Rockers" is lesser known than the Jimmy Cliff film "The Harder They Come," but it's just as good. While a feature, it almost feels like a documentary as you have a bunch of Jamaican musicians playing themselves. I wasn't familiar with the lead (a drummer named Horsemouth), but Burning Spear, Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs, and Inner Circle, among others, all make appearances. The plot is somewhat incidental to the rich portrayal of the culture and the great music, which permeates almost every scene. This deluxe DVD has a bunch of bonus features, a booklet, and a helpful glossary of Jamaican terms. It's tougher than tough!
