I read this recently and wanted to immediately jump on a plane to Scotland. Higgs mentions all of her favorite towns, historical sites, restaurants and experiences with a knowledgeable familiarity born of many research trips to Scotland to produce her
works of fiction. However, she is not a traveler who lords their knowledge over the reader's head or is snide about the reader's presumed unfamiliarity with the region and its history. She quite readily makes fun of her own missteps and misfortunes. The book is written in a style which may annoy some people, however, as she talks to the reader as if they are traveling with her the whole time. In my opinion, the writer includes way too many excerpts from her own works of fiction, but perhaps I would feel differently if those excerpts appealed to me at all, which they did not, as they seemed to be some kind of syrupy, epic-historical-romance, soap-opera drivel. Nevertheless, her description of a trip around southwest Scotland is cozy, charming, enticing and perfect to curl up with on a rainy day with a cup of hot tea.
