During a party at the family farm in the English countryside, sixteen-year-old Laurel Nicolson has escaped to her childhood tree house and is dreaming of the future. She spies a stranger coming up the road and sees her mother speak to him. Before the afternoon is over, Laurel will witness a shocking crime that challenges everything she knows about her family and especially her mother, Dorothy. Now, fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to the family farm for Dorothy's ninetieth birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by questions she has not thought about for decades. From pre-WWII England through the Blitz, to the fifties and beyond, discover the secret history of three strangers from vastly different worlds--Dorothy, Vivien, and Jimmy--who meet by chance in wartime London and whose lives are forever entwined. "The Secret Keeper" explores longings and dreams, the lengths people go to fulfill them, and the consequences they can have. It is a story of lovers, friends, dreamers, and schemers told--in Morton's signature style--against a backdrop of events that changed the world.

Amazing! Definitely one of those books that I was sad when it was over because I was so attached to the characters.

Read this a few months ago and was thoroughly entertained. Holds you captive until the big reveal. I highly recommend this book.

In 1961, 16-year-old Laurel witnesses a shocking murder, perpetrated by her beautiful and loving mother, Dorothy. Laurel has never understood what might have caused her mother’s uncharacteristic actions. The secret remains buried until 2011, when Laurel, now a famous character actress, comes back to her childhood home to visit her mother, who is aged and dying. Confronted with the possibility of never understanding why the murder occurred, Laurel begins trying to piece together her mother’s past.

The reader is treated to more of the back story than Laurel will be able to find, and here we meet Dorothy, Vivien and Jimmy, whose lives become entwined in dramatic and unexpected fashion during 1941, when London is under siege.

Jumping between 1961, 1941 and 2011, Kate Morton pulls all the threads together in a very surprising twist at the end. As with Morton’s other books, I felt that the story could have been just as strong with a bit less detail. But that’s a minor complaint about a very good book.

Kate Morton's books are complex and always keep your attention with her surprise twists and turns. The story alternates between 1941 and 2011 as Laurel Nicholson, an acclaimed actress, tries to uncover her mother's secret past. The story opens in 1961 when 16-year-old Laurel sees a stranger approaching her mother from the family treehouse. Before Laurel can climb down, the stranger is dead and her mother is holding a bloody knife. Good narration and a fascinating read make this a great summer read at the beach, in the mountains, or next to a lake.
