"Two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) plays Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in this compelling mystery series inspired by Ann Cleeves's bestselling novels. Patrolling her patch of northeast England, Vera resolutely pursues the truth in cases of murder, kidnapping, and blackmail. While her manner is sometimes caustic, her single-mindedness gets results. Vera is supported by her trusted team, including right-hand man Detective Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Leon, RocknRolla). A family man, Ashworth is ever trying to strike a balance between home and work. Meanwhile, forensic pathologist Billy Cartwright (Paul Ritter, The Eagle) and Detective Constable Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison, High Times) tend to bring out the scathing side of their boss. Guest stars in these four new feature-length dramas include Saskia Reeves (Luther), Dean Andrews (Life on Mars), and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones)."--Container.

The third series was actually better than the first two. The writers actually toned the character of Vera down from the first two series which made the third series much better. The first two series I found the character of Vera to be all over the place and to come across of overacting. The third series with toning the character of Vera down ended up complementing the other actors and actresses and the overall result was a better show. After watching the first two series I was hesitant in watching series three but now I am interested in getting series four. Series 3 was worth watching.

I got my first Vera dvd at the library. I love her - she is fantastic.
I plan to add her dvds to my collection.
Please keep more seasons coming - looking forward to #7 and #8.

Vera is a very likable, but eccentric character who could use a bit of spiff to her wardrobe. Interesting mystery plots. I quite enjoy this series set in Northern England!

Can you believe that there's actually a detective show that's relaxing? Bring on more Vera.

This season focuses more on the mystery to be solved each episode than on the personal lives of the characters, so it is the most "action" packed season so far. I like this series because I can't figure it out in the first 10 minutes, but we do get the clues as soon as Vera does--no secret held back to cause a twist, and when things do fall into place it all seems reasonable.

These DVDs are so good to watch when there is nothing worth watching on TV in the evenings. This set includes:
Castles in the Air, Poster Child, Young Gods, Prodigal Son. Each is 90 minutes long. Characters are based on Ann Cleeve's work, but the plots are written by others. Doesn't matter - stories are still good.
