An epic drama on a Shakespearean scale that addresses serious social issues steeped in a world of music, money, power and corruption. Highly recommended.

The comment from LPL_FisherA describes the series well as a King Lear adaptation that verges on soap opera but still manages a "poignant social commentary on class, gender, sexuality, race, and mental health". I agree whole-heartedly. The best parts of the show are when they provide their sophisticated spin of music bombast with an important message about the real world and the society we live in. I am hugely inclined to recommend this series, but I can also see its weaknesses being enough to turn off some watchers. Still, for most, there is something to be enjoyed, so I would definitely give it a shot.

A great show. There are complex characters struggling to find their way in the world. Nothing is a simple as it seems and of course, everyone has a secret. Then, there is the music. The music is what makes this show great. It weaves smoothly in and out of the story that you don't even realize it's a part of the storytelling. I'm looking forward to season 2!

Empire is my favorite new show of 2014, and here are all the reasons why I fell in love with this incredible drama from the talented Lee Daniels and Danny Strong. A modern incarnation of King Lear, Empire tells the story of Lucious Lyon - the head of a multi-billion dollar music company who is tragically diagnosed with ALS. With three sons to inherit his throne, each are pitted against one another to see who has the gusto to take over Empire. What surprised me the most about this show is that although it often verges into full blown soap opera territory, it still manages to make a poignant social commentary on class, gender, sexuality, race, and mental health. The writing and character development are both so incredible that you become emotionally invested in the entire cast. If I had a dollar for every time I “felt all the feels” while watching Empire, I would be as wealthy as Lucious Lyon himself. Taraji P. Henson steals every scene she is in as the confidently catty Cookie Lyon, who just so happens to be Lucious’ ex-wife. With relentless pacing, this show is perfect if you are in the mood for a binge watch. And, the finale will absolutely blow your mind with all of its twists and turns. I cannot say enough good things about Empire. It is a must watch.
