"Grace Willingdon has everything she needs. For fifteen years she's lived in a trailer overlooking Bras d'Or Lakes in postcard-perfect Baddeck, Cape Breton, with Fletcher Parsons, a giant teddy bear who's not even her husband. But Grace's blissful life is rudely interrupted when her estranged son calls from New York City, worried about his teenaged daughter. Before she knows it, Grace finds herself the temporary guardian of her self-absorbed, city-slicker granddaughter, Melissa. Trapped between a past she's been struggling to resolve and a present that keeps her on her toes, Grace decides to finally tell her story. Either the truth will absolve her, or cost her everything."--Nimbus Publishing.

Lesley Crewe on Mindfulness and Libraries

By guest blogger and Word on the Street Halifax 2018 featured author, Lesley Crewe The meaning of mindfulness According to the experts, we all need more mindfulness and mediation in our lives, and increasingly, our youngest children are in dire need of these practises, given the amount of distractions that plague them daily. I come from Cape Breton roots and connected with characters to the extent that I savored the last pages. Coincidences? Yes, no more than most action mystery novels.
Hugs to the little girl that was left and the aunties that were found.

Loved it,loved it, loved it! This page turner has it all as protagonist Amazing Grace swims through life starting with an abusive childhood to grand-motherhood surrounded by family. Grace buys into the mantra "Kin is kin" which she learned from her great aunts and this helps her find family. A book full of coincidences but pleasant to read with some tearjerker pages (tears of joy.)

I really enjoyed this book. The story is mostly about family, community and dealing with (and sometimes preventing) personal tragedy through personal determination and the kindness of others -- all this is combined with some delightful bits of humour.

This is an engaging story but it's just that, a story. Too much "and they Iived happily ever after" stuff. Very little substance.

Why this book was chosen for a reading program beats me. It's ok in the beginning but quickly gets sappy. And why no proofreading?? Do the editors deliberately want to present Maritimers as quasi-illiterate?

this is a very fast read and has very good ratings on goodreads and elsewhere.
I agree with this reviewer

that the book challenges reality - tooooo many coincidences and moments of salvation all around.
