During World War II three young Nisei men enlisted in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an American military unit composed entirely of Japanese-Americans and sent to the most brutal battlefields of Europe. One of them, Robert, wins fame on the battlefield; two generations later his grandson Kane is an aspiring novelist in Hawaii. Another is thought to have been killed in action; now his granddaughter Mana has arrived in Hawaii to scatter his ashes. As Kane and Mana begin to trace their own roots and untangle the riddles surrounding their family histories, the story connects past and present and future, America and Europe and Japan.
