"Are you constantly striving to keep up with life's busy expectations? It's easy to feel consumed with the desire to "succeed" and "acquire" and miss the simple opportunities waiting for you to slow down: a walk in the forest, sharing laughter with family, a personal moment of gratitude...Slow provides practical advice and fascinating insights into: messiness to mindfulness, decluttering to de-owning, asking why to asking where to now? Slow is an invitation to live, not just to exist."--Page 4 of cover.

it seemed to say just lower your self expectations a bit
that you can't do it all every day but that if you reach
some of your daily goals you are doing well
learn to flex a litte...somedays you will do all your exercise
some other days you get all the house cleaning chores done
but maybe not both on both days and that's ok

Great read! I tend to get caught up in the whole "how can I use all my time wisely" loop but it makes me feel mentally exhausted. This book was a good reminder to slow down not only in my activities but in my household and in my brain and just enjoy what I'm doing... whatever it is. McAlary doesn't preach but she gives great guidance by sharing her thought processes and her actions.

Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. I have been listening to Brooke’s podcast she does with her husband (The Slow Home Podcast) for quite awhile now and love love love it! I was so excited when this book came out and it was so much more than I expected.

This book isn’t going to be a “how-to” slow your life down guide or give you lists of what constitutes an appropriate slower life. What it WILL give you is reflection, at least that is what it gave me.

It helped me see what areas of my own life I want to change so I can be more aligned with what is most important to me and it inspired me to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life on MY terms and no one else’s.

Also - while I am a notorious cryer when it comes to movies - only 4 books have brought me to tears and this is one of them. The last page had me crying. I am not sure why...if it is what I needed or just longed to hear - someone telling me it really IS ok to slow down in this society of go go go go.

I first came across this title while I was paying invoices for the library and this book was on the list. The title intrigued me, so I wrote down the call number on a sticky note, which sat on my desk for three weeks. As I was sorting my to do pile, the sticky note was unearthed and I looked up the book to put a hold on it. It was my lucky day since the book was on the shelf and I checked it out.

I had every intention of starting the book right away, but it sat on my night stand for about a week (are you seeing a pattern?). I finally started it while we were out of town on a long weekend. The book is simply written with clear and direct information. After chapter 4, titled "Mindfulness," I had my "ah ha" moment.

Why are our coveted weekends filled to the brim with activities that we don't really want to do? Why do the dishes have to be done before I play with my son before he goes to bed? Why do I feel the need to "keep up with the Joneses" (ironically my husband's best friend is a Jones)? Why can't I just enjoy an afternoon with nothing scheduled?

This book just scratches the surface of living with intention and being mindful of your choices. But, it was a wake up call for me and will hopefully lead to positive changes in the near future. I've already enjoyed rocking my son to sleep for just a little longer than necessary, just because I want to.
