I have loved the Yotsuba! series since volume 2 and am impressed at its consistently high standard in terms of plot, humour and character development. In fact it seems to be getting better all the time! This is probably the best manga series I have read in a long time, barring Kimi ni Todoke. I haven't reviewed Yotsuba before, so I will start with my general thoughts about the entire series: it is a very gentle slice-of-life series where each chapter (sometimes two) is a separate story. The humour is warm and very gentle and overall it feels charming, adorable and heartwarming. BUT never sickly sweet, precocious or sentimental - a big achievement, in my opinion. I love this series for two main reasons: firstly, because Yotsuba has realistic behaviour and mannerisms of a preschooler; and secondly, because Yotsuba's dad is very unusual as manga dads go - he works from home and is a single dad and primary caregiver to Yotsuba; he appears extensively in most chapters. (I think this is hugely important and unusual because parents are so often absent from children's stories.) Did I also mention that Mr Koiwai seems like a lovely dad? He is affectionate but firm, not afraid to be a bit silly, and seriously understands his little girl. Overall - I'm a fan, I think it's great, just read it.
