Planting Solutions for Shady Gardens

I read this cover-to-cover and took notes (which is not always the case -- I often just look at the photos and scan some text in gardening books). Great content. Liked that the author critiques the photos (they are inspirational, but aren't all perfect) -- he points out, for example, what would be hard to maintain and why, or improvements he'd suggest to the composition. The shade plant directory in the last several pages is excellent, with lots of commentary based on his experience with the particular plants. It's useful that he points out hardiness zones in that directory; wish he'd done that in the rest of the book, since many of the plants are not Minnesota zone 4 hardy. I had to keep looking up online the zone for various plants I'd come across, which is a hassle and was mostly a repeated disappointment. Despite that, I will be reading other books by this author. Would be great to have the same type of shade-specific book "for cold climates". -- a MN master gardener
