Nic Stone’s novel, Dear Martin, shows the unfortunate and true reality of racism towards African Americans in the United States today. Justyce McAllister, a student set for the Ivy Leagues, is arrested by the police for trying to help someone. His classmates ridicule him, and he becomes extremely tired of hearing slurs and other racist comments. This causes Justyce to write to Dr. Martin Luther King in a journal to figure out how to deal with all the racism he is facing. Then, a tragic incident happens and causes Justyce to get bombarded with numerous questions from the media. I liked that the author has added other elements to the story, such as romance and humor. I also liked that this book helped me see and understand a different perspective on racism. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, because it showed me the experiences of different people, which were interesting to me.
