The town of Greenstone is filled with quirky characters and Virgil Wander sees them all in a different light (especially himself) after he is rescued from the bottom of Lake Superior. I love the way he describes himself as "the former tenant" when he knows he is saying or doing something that is out of character. The old Norwegian who shows up and enthralls the town with his kites is an fascinating element to the story. Then there is Adam Leer, the prodigal son. He definitely has a dark side and remains a man of mystery throughout adding depth to the plot. Will Virgil actually live up to his name and leave Greenstone? Is the missing baseball player really dead or just a run away? Can Greenstone renew itself and come out of the shadow of the taconite processing plant?
