A convoy is assembling in Halifax, preparing to bring supplies, munitions and men to the frontlines in Europe. All day, pilot boats have been guiding ships through the Halifax Harbour and its anti-U-boat measures, up into Bedford Basin. The pilots and crews manning the pilot boats have been at it for hours when the Hebridean is sent to meet the Esmond, an England-bound freighter. In the dark, the Hebridean crosses the Esmond's path, resulting in a collision that only two of the nine men aboard the Hebridean survive. The tragedy of the Hebridean did not end with these men's deaths. The ensuing inquiry yielded no clear answers about why the collision occurred and families of the lost men faced both censorship and government apathy to get the compensation and truth they were owned." --Back cover.
