All day, pilot boats have been guiding ships through the Halifax Harbour and its anti-U-boat measures, up into Bedford Basin. The pilots and crews manning the pilot boats have been at it for hours when the Hebridean is sent to meet the Esmond, an England-bound freighter. In the dark, the Hebridean crosses the Esmond's path, resulting in a collision that only two of the nine men aboard the Hebridean survive. The tragedy of the Hebridean did not end with these men's deaths.
